ヤシ科ヤエヤマヤシ属ヤエヤマヤシ八重山列島の固有種。高さ15～20mの巨木。木が見えなくても芳香がする。天然記念物の自生地、沖縄県石垣島米原ヤエヤマヤシ群落ではむせるような芳香に包まれた。
